Arkansas Best Corp.
2008 // Arkansas Community Foundation's Outstanding Philanthropic Corporations Fort Smith
Arkansas Best, a transportation holding company whose main subsidiary is ABF Freight System Inc., a less-than-truckload trucking company, has been greatly involved in supporting charitable and nonprofit causes through the donation of money, goods and services.
In addition, the company believes employees with an interest and commitment to nonprofit causes should be given the opportunity to serve as volunteers, board members and officers.
For a number of years, the company headed by President and CEO Robert A. Davidson has been a leading contributor to United Way. It sponsored presentations by United Way agencies to inform employees about their work and needs.
The company also participates in the Fort Smith Public Schools Partners-in-Education program. Giving each year is based on charities that serve important needs, along with continuing commitments and donation requests approved throughout the current year. Charitable, educational or value-based causes are given priority. Additional consideration is given to requests from employees who are involved in the charitable organization needing support.
The company donates in-kind services to nonprofit organizations. Such services include technical, legal, accounting or management assistance or products. Its information technology subsidiary, Data-Tronics Inc., donates computer equipment to nonprofit agencies, churches and schools.
ABF has donated trailers to charitable organizations and has provided transportation of dry food from the Arkansas Foodbank Network in Little Rock for distribution to not-for-profit organizations in the Arkansas River Valley.
Arkansas Best also made significant donations toward the expansion of the Fort Smith Convention Center, which brought about a major renovation of the Arkansas Best Corporation Center for the Performing Arts.
