2010 // Arkansas Community Foundation's Outstanding Philanthropic Corporations

Texarkana

Paul Keener, president and CEO of the Texarkana Community Journal, admits that he knew nothing about running a magazine when he bought the publication in 2007. Since buying the publication, however, Keener has made it his mission to use the journal to support the community it exists in.
Though the publication operates with only five employees, the printing demand of the publication has increased from 3,000 copies to its current 10,000, tangible evidence of Keener's success.
"The mission is to provide coverage of events that are often overlooked by the mainstream media," Keener said. "I only print things that are informational, inspirational and educational."
The TCJ is being honored by the Arkansas Community Foundation because that success has been shared with nonprofit organizations. The journal has donated advertising space to many organizations to provide the community with information on health issues, such as heart disease, breast cancer, prostate cancer and pregnancy.
The journal also has donated advertising space to schools and churches and runs a monthly section featuring young people who have excelled in academics, athletics, community service, leadership and entrepreneurship.
In addition, TJC encourages its employees to volunteer in the community and recognizes them for their efforts.
Though Keener said his ultimate goal was to be able to print papers in cities around the country, it's his work and the journal's work in the Texarkana community that means the most to him.
"It's a labor of love," he said. "Things like that mean a whole lot to me."
