Trinity Multifamily has been about growth since Dave Pinson joined the company as regional director in 2011.

None of the growth that has happened since, and it has been substantial, would have been possible without the quality employee base the company has developed. Pinson, now the company’s CEO and president, said Trinity manages approximately 19,000 housing units in 14 states.

When Pinson joined the company, Trinity had 35 employees. Today it has 400.

One of the challenges of the company’s expansion is finding managers for each complex of units added to the portfolio. Pinson said that because the company has focused on good hires over the years, many of its job openings are filled by internal promotions.

“With a growing company there are some strains from time to time, but I feel like that is one of the things we have done well,” said Pinson, referring to the company’s long-term employees. “They know our management approach. They know what our niche is. Those people are now in leadership supervisory roles.”

Pinson said that as Trinity has grown, the quality of its external job applicants has improved. Trinity has become a respected place to work, which makes it easier to expand even more.

“We piggy-backed off 2017 and had some good momentum building,” Pinson said. “There’s something to be said about having positive momentum as a company. We operate in some fairly good rental markets but, in certain ones, it is hard to hire good people. To find a good employment base is difficult. We can do internal job postings now when we move into a new market.”

The goal is to keep expanding. Pinson said that in housing management, a larger scale results in better efficiency; why manage 250 units in a town when you can manage 1,000?

“That’s our growth model,” Pinson said. “When we enter a market, we try to develop economies of scale, which is beneficial for everyone involved. We try to partner with people who have the same type growth strategy that we have as far as being committed to these local markets.”
