It took courage to do what Asa Hutchinson did, to seek the Republican Party presidential nomination.

He went up against a field of candidates who were almost all better known, including possibly the most famous person on the planet, one with a fanatical following: Donald Trump.

In dropping out of the race, Hutchinson has acknowledged the inevitable. He had to have known that his was a long-shot bid and that his efforts would cost him, but the former Arkansas governor chose to put himself out there as a reasonable, traditional conservative, one who believes in the rule of law and in presenting a hopeful vision for the future.

Alas, there proved to be little appetite for such a throw-back to old-school Republicanism. Not in Iowa, certainly, and not nationally.

“The policies of grievance and anger is really not a policy, and it’s not a vision for the future that sells,” Hutchinson said. “It has some short-term success, but it does not have long-term opportunity for our party or the country.”

It will be interesting to see how Hutchinson proceeds as the brutal selection process for the GOP nominee continues. Will he remain true to the principles he demonstrated in his race for the candidacy?

Some of us still believe in the nobility of doing what you think is right even when you know you’re going to lose.
