What if drug researchers could get real-time data on how new compounds affect human organs without the need to experiment on animals and humans?

Humimic Biosystems is working to make that a reality.

Spun off the University of Arkansas Mechanobiology & Soft Materials Laboratory in 2023, Humimic is developing benchtop models that mimic organs and tissues like the heart, brain and nasal airways. Known as organ-on-chip devices, they comprise lab-engineered tissue connected to circuits that allow data to be collected and analyzed.

“These platforms can be used to accelerate drug discoveries,” said Kartik Balachandran, Humimic’s cofounder and chief technology officer.

Humimic is focused on gaining traction in the research community before looking for investors and marketing products to the pharmaceutical industry within the next two years.

Humimic’s technology stands out from competing OOC devices, which require customers to purchase entire labs, because Humimic’s devices are compatible with equipment and workflows already present in most research and commercial labs.
