William Garner, Championed Greers Ferry Lake, Dies

William Garner, who helped champion the development of Greers Ferry Lake, died Sunday at the age of 99.

Garner, of Tumbling Shoals, worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for 58 years, during which time he also helped develop Bull Shoals Dam in Mountain Home and Table Rock Dam in Branson, Missouri. Garner also initiated the Greers Ferry Lake and Little Red River Cleanup using community volunteers, an effort that led to the Great Arkansas Cleanup and National Public Lands Day.

He was chief of the engineering division for the Greers Ferry project in Heber Springs as well as the resident engineer.

One of the great highlights of his career was planning and organizing the dedication of the dam at Greers Ferry by President John F. Kennedy on October 3, 1963.
