Dr. Pope Moseley
Dr. Pope L. Moseley has been named dean of the College of Medicine and executive vice chancellor at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, effective July 15.
Moseley succeeds Dr. G. Richard Smith, who was dean and vice chancellor of UAMS for the last two years. Smith, who first joined the faculty of UAMS in 1981, announced last year that he wanted to step down once a successor was found.
Smith’s last day as dean will be March 31. Dr. Richard Turnage, chair of the college’s surgery department, will be interim dean until July 15.
Moseley has been professor and chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of New Mexico (UNM) School of Medicine in Albuquerque since 2001. Since 2013, he was a UNM School of Medicine Distinguished Professor. He also served at UNM as an associate dean for research and chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine.
UAMS Chancellor Dr. Dan Rahn said Moseley is “ideally suited to lead the faculty and staff of the college to advance its mission.”
As dean, Moseley will oversee all aspects of the College of Medicine, the largest college at UAMS with 682 students, 30 departments and free-standing divisions, more than 1,100 full- and part-time faculty members, a professional practice group and 650 residents and fellows.
“My first goal is to learn about the faculty, students, staff and trainees,” Moseley said in a news release. “It’s a wonderful place that is taking a thoughtful and bold approach to redefining the future of medical education, research, patient care and service.”
