Millie Ward, the Little Rock advertising guru who’s the subject of one of this week’s cover stories, illustrates a welcome change in thinking about women and their place in this world, business and otherwise.

She’s believed to be the first woman to have been named a partner in a major advertising agency in Arkansas and one of the first in the Southwest. In a lengthy interview with an Arkansas Business reporter, not once did she refer to her status as a pioneer, and when asked directly about it, she said she didn’t want really to discuss it. She agreed that it just might be a sign of progress that the subject hadn’t arisen earlier.

Ward, like us, may look forward to the day when we no longer find it relevant to label people as the “first woman” this or that.

Ward also had excellent advice for anyone in business: “I always tell people here that if you have a crossroads where you don’t know what to do, do what’s best for the client and that will ultimately be what’s best for the company.”

It’s advice that we wish Arkansas’ elected officials would take: Do what’s best for the people of Arkansas and that will ultimately be what’s best for you.

Being realists, we’d add this: Do what’s best for the people of Arkansas even when it may not be what’s best for you. Do it because it’s the right thing. We’ve seen some spectacular failures at this.

Finally, John Glasgow’s family are respected members of the business community in Arkansas, as was he. We’re thankful his body was found. Now perhaps the many remaining questions can be answered.
