Gov. Asa Hutchinson on Tuesday continued his calls to further open Cuba to Arkansas businesses, urging Congress to allow “flexibility in credit extension” to the country as it re-establishes relations with the United States.
The governor’s office released excerpt of the letter, addressed the majority and minority leadership in both chambers of Congress. The letter comes a little more than a month after Hutchinson concluded an economic development trip the Communist nation.
Hutchinson has said Congress must allow credit sales to the Cuba. He has pointed out that countries like Brazil and Vietnam have gained footholds in Cuba because of their willingness to allow credit.
“The current cash-in-advance requirement limits a potential market of nearly $40 million for Arkansas products alone,” Hutchinson wrote in the letter. “Allowing flexibility in credit extension is an important next step, and Congress can support enhanced livelihoods for Americans by moving the legislation co-sponsored by Congressman Rick Crawford (HR3687) and Senator John Boozman (S1049), which provide financial flexibility to sell American commodities to Cuba.”
