State Lawsuits Over Online Gambling Might Not Be A Fantasy

1 min read

You might have heard that the New York attorney general recently threw water on the fantasy sports betting companies DraftKings and FanDuel by saying New York residents can’t participate in the booming betting business.

New York’s AG, Eric Schneiderman, said the fantasy sports games were actually illegal gambling under New York law.

The companies have said they will fight the attorney general in court to let New Yorkers play games that allow them to pick NFL players and use their performance in actual football games to give the fantasy team owners points.

Meanwhile, Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge is evaluating how to proceed.

“Fantasy sports websites, such as DraftKings and FanDuel, vary greatly from local fantasy leagues and essentially offer consumers games of chance and not of skill,” Judd Deere, Rutledge’s spokesman, said in an email to Whispers. Rutledge also “continues to have conversations with other attorneys general regarding possible legal action against these companies.”

If you recall, in October Nevada banned the daily fantasy sports websites from the state.
