Actress Nichelle Nichols (top left) and children’s author Jennifer L. Holm are scheduled to appear at Spa-Con, Sept. 23–25, at the Hot Springs Convention Center.
Hot Springs is bringing television legend Nichelle Nichols — Lieutenant Uhura on “Star Trek” — to the city as part of its first “Spa-Con,” an entertainment and comic convention to be held at the Hot Springs Convention Center Sept. 23-25.
Also attending will be Jennifer L. Holm, a New York Times-bestselling children’s book author and the recipient of three Newbery Honors.
Nichols and Holm will be available for interaction with fans, the Hot Springs Convention & Visitors Bureau said in a news release, and Nichols will participate in a Q&A luncheon (extra ticket purchase required) with her fans.
“It’s not just comic books and sci-fi/fantasy-related film and television,” said Chrissy Egleston, marketing director for Visit Hot Springs. “This convention includes pop culture and entertainment elements spanning virtually all genres.”
“I’d also like to point out that Nichelle Nichols and Jennifer Holm are only the first two special guests we plan to invite to the first Spa-Con,” Egleston said. “In the coming days we will be announcing additional guests who will enhance the fun and excitement of our weekend.”
The convention will encompass a number of genres, including horror, animation, anime, manga, toys, collectible card games, videogames, Web comics and fantasy novels.
Events during the weekend will include the Spa-Con Kickoff party, Bar Trek log and competition prize, access to all panels and Q&A sessions (except the luncheon with Nichols), access to game rooms (subject to availability) and admittance to a Cosplay Party.
Spa-Con is sponsored jointly by the Convention Center and the Garland County Library.
Nichols is a pop culture icon. She was the first black woman to share an interracial kiss on network television, with co-star William Shatner, who played Capt. James T. Kirk.
Holm is the author of the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel Babymouse series and the bestselling Squish series, both of which she creates with her brother, Matthew Holm.
An expo will feature vendors and an Artist Alley will provide opportunities to meet and visit with artists.
Information about the convention and ticket pricing is available at the event’s website, Spa-Con.org or call Egleston at (501) 321-2027.
