The Arkansas Forestry Commission (AFC) has named Daniel Browne as the new State Forest Manager of Poison Springs State Forest (PSSF). PSSF includes 23,506 acres in western Ouachita and eastern Nevada counties and is a demonstration forest for good forest management practices, timber production, recreation, water quality protection, research, and wildlife habitat.
Browne has a rich background in forest industry management, planning, and procurement in the southern region – having spent almost eight years between leading industry companies including Timberland Harvesters and Weyerhaeuser. Before working in forestry, Browne spent eight years of active duty with the Army National Guard. Browne has a forestry degree from Louisiana Tech University.
“Daniel’s varied background in management and procurement make him a valuable asset to the AFC, and a great choice for leading the management goals and growth of our State Forest. Due to many years of successful management by the Poison Springs State Forest crew and previous Forest Manager Ed Montgomery, Daniel has a great starting point and big opportunity for growth in the future,” says State Forester Joe Fox.
He is a native of Louisiana, but is excited to move his family of three to Arkansas, as his wife is originally from the Greers Ferry area. His top priorities for the rest of 2016 include evaluating processes in place, and identifying potential areas for improvement and growth. PSSF was originally purchased by the AFC in 1957, and was named after the Battle of Poison Springs. It is the only State Forest in Arkansas, and is also designated as a Wildlife Management Area by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.
