The bed count of Drew Memorial Hospital may not be overwhelming, but there’s much more to the Monticello-based hospital than first meets the eye.
“Drew Memorial Hospital is an acute-care facility licensed for 49 beds,” said Scott Barrilleaux, CEO. “In addition to our medical/surgical floor, ICU, and emergency departments, we offer many specialty services to a population of 200,000 in southeast Arkansas.”
The range of these services rivals any health care system in the state, including rehabilitation therapy, home health care, outpatient geriatric psychiatry, a cancer treatment center, two general surgeons on staff, respiratory therapy, comprehensive women’s services that includes a staff OB/GYN, and a wound center.
Drew Memorial also maintains a sleep center, radiology/imaging and laboratory services as well as clinic space to visiting specialists who travel to Monticello multiple times each month, ensuring access to a wide range of physician services to area residents. Last year, the hospital was also approved to pursue Trauma Level IV designation.
It’s also been recognized for the quality of these services. The hospital received the UAMS-ARSAVES best door-to-needle time in the state for the month of June 2016 for quick treatment of stroke patients. It also earned the 2016 National Research Corporation Excellence Award for Most Improved Small Hospital, an award based on overall patient experience scores.
“We pride ourselves in a highly trained staff that is both professional, befitting a regional health care institution, and also compassionate, as you would expect from a local hospital,” Barrilleaux said. “We often hear that patients feel like they are with family while they visit our hospital because our part of the state truly is a tightly knit community.”
The community responded, voting for a sales tax last year to support the hospital’s work.
“The sales tax was passed by one of the widest special election margins in memorable county history,” Barrilleaux said.
In September, officials broke ground on a 51,000-SF expansion with an estimated completion date of early 2018. The new area will feature a larger surgery center with six operating rooms, including two dedicated C-section suites, and pre-op and post-op areas and an outpatient clinic. The addition also triles the size of the nursery, and house labor, delivery and recovery unit.
“The construction project itself is estimated to create a $2 million annual economic impact even before the new facilities are up and running,” Barrilleaux said. “Once completed, increased capacity for the affected service lines will impact the success of the hospital and its economic influence on Drew County for years to come.”
