The University of Arkansas at Little Rock has received $603,000 from the Windgate Charitable Foundation to create an endowed professorship and to provide an artist-in-residence and gallery support for the university’s new Windgate Center of Art & Design.
A Windgate professorship in art and design, a permanent and tenure-track position, will be funded with $425,000 of the grant, which the university will receive over a five-year period.
Another $103,000 of the donation will be used to support a two-year visiting artist-in-residence in contemporary crafts, specifically metals and jewelry.
And $75,000 will be awarded over three years to support the art gallery program and help the university bring in the best possible exhibits.
This gift is in addition to the $20.3 million the foundation gave UA Little Rock to build the center, which opened in January and now houses all of the university’s art and design programs.
“Windgate’s investment in our building and now in this endowed professorship sets us on a trajectory for national prominence,” Christian O’Neal, vice chancellor for university advancement, said in a news release. “It allows us to compete with recognized programs, not just in Arkansas but nationally.”
