Small Hospital WINNER: CrossRidge Community Hospital, Wynne

2 min read

The community receives. The community gives.

For 65 years, CrossRidge Community Hospital has provided residents of Wynne and Cross County with essential care plus prevention, treatment and awareness programs. Like many hospitals, CrossRidge, one of 29 critical access hospitals in the state, relies on local sales tax revenues for financial stability.

The hospital’s value to the people is made clear each election day. For almost 20 years voters have approved a 1-cent sales tax, with 93 percent voting for it the last time out.

And look what they get for their 1 cent.

A hospital information system was installed eight years ago to improve continuity of care, a gastrointestinal lab opened late last year along with expanded outpatient clinics with physician specialists and digital mammography.

Clearly, CrossRidge embraces technology.

Telemedicine capability has been utilized — important in a rural area — and CrossRidge, originally known as Cross County Hospital, is becoming more proactive in population health, responding to community needs based on regional population health data.

It has used grant money to combat underage drinking and substance abuse in schools and the community, provide mammograms to low-income patients and promote prostate and breast cancer screenings.

The hospital, now affiliated with St. Bernards in Jonesboro, can tie into St. Bernards’ technology to further expand its capabilities. CrossRidge is part of the St. Bernards ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) program that expedites treatment for that particularly life-threatening type of heart attack.

CrossRidge is also affiliated with the AR SAVES stroke program of UAMS in Little Rock.

Partnering with ARcare, the Arkansas Department of Human Services and Arkansas Department of Health, CrossRidge targets “Hometown Health” with mass flu clinics and other public health projects.

Consistently placing high in Hospital Consumer Assessment and Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) rankings, CrossRidge will continue the community love for the foreseeable future.

Expansions and renovations are planned for the physical facility, including an expanded emergency department and renovated CT and MRI facilities.
