Economic Impact of U.S. Gaming Industry

Consumers in the United States spent $89 billion at casinos in 2017, $13 billion more than they spent on tickets for sporting events, according to a report released by the American Gaming Association. The report, “Economic Impact of the U.S. Gaming Industry,” was released in June 2018 and was compiled by Oxford Economics, an economic forecasting company based in Oxford, England.

It found that the U.S. gaming industry as a whole in 2017 had a total economic impact of $261.4 billion of output, with 1.8 million jobs and $40.8 billion in tax revenue.

In analyzing the gaming industry, the report examined casinos (commercial and Native American casinos and card rooms), gaming manufacturers and ancillary spending by consumers during trips to casinos, for example on lodging, food and beverages.

In addition, the report noted that casinos are one of the largest recreational employers in the nation, employing 559,000 workers in 2017.
