1 min read

Alan Utter, Ph.D., has been named provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, effective July 1.

His appointment is subject to approval by the A-State system’s board of trustees; they are expected to approve it at their regularly scheduled board meeting in June. Utter succeeds Lynita Cooksey, Ph.D., who is retiring at the close of this fiscal year.

Utter is the provost and vice president for academic affairs at Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas. Before that, he was the vice provost for research at Appalachian State University.

While at App State, Utter was the founding director of the university office of student research and had a lengthy tenure as a professor in the department of health and education.

He holds a doctorate in exercise physiology, two master’s degrees (in exercise physiology and in public health) and a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from the University of Pittsburgh.

Utter began his teaching career at App State in 1995 as an assistant professor, was promoted to associate in 2001 and to full professor in 2004. From 1996 to 2002, he was the director of graduate programs within the App State Department of Health, Leisure and Exercise Science.
