Walmart Inc. of Bentonville said Wednesday that it will begin selling insurance plans through Walmart Insurance Services LLC, an insurance brokerage licensed in all 50 states and in Washington D.C.
In a blog post, the retailer said it aims to simplify “a cumbersome, confusing process.”
Walmart said it will begin selling Medicare insurance plans during the open enrollment period that runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7. Walmart Insurance Services will at first provide Part D, Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans offered by Humana, UnitedHealthcare, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Amerigroup, Simply Health, Wellcare (Centene), Clover Health and Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
More carriers may be added in the future, Walmart said.
“We want customers to feel confident in selecting a Medicare plan that best fits their needs, budget and lifestyle,” David Sullivan, general manager of Walmart Insurance Services, said in a news release. “And we want to be a trusted partner on their health care journey. Helping customers select the right Medicare insurance plan to meet their needs aligns with Walmart’s mission of helping people save money and live better.”
The move comes amid Walmart’s other health care initiatives, which include its $4 generic prescription program; Walmart Health locations that provide primary, hearing, eye and dental care, lab and x-ray services and counseling; and its Healthcare Begins Here program, which provides health care information to customers, as well as access to preventative services, immunizations and in-store health insurance enrollment.
