Hospital CFO Winner: Bill Craig, Howard Memorial Hospital

Hospital CFO Winner: Bill Craig, Howard Memorial Hospital
Bill Craig • CFO, Howard Memorial Hospital | Nashville

For more than a decade, Bill Craig has watched Howard Memorial Hospital in Nashville grow.

“When I came to work here the only thing on our campus was the hospital and a medical office building that was near completion,” said Craig, who joined the 20-bed hospital in 2010 as its CFO.

Over the years, the hospital has spent about $5 million on projects including a new 8,000-SF medical office building and an outpatient behavioral health building for people 55 and older. “We have an actual medical campus here,” Craig said. “That’s a huge undertaking for a small rural hospital.”

As CFO, Craig administers the hospital’s $75 million annual budget.

Born in Little Rock, Craig said he has always been interested in numbers. “That was my first appeal to pursue a career in accounting,” he said.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 1981.

While working at Baird Kurtz & Dobson in its Little Rock office in 1987, Craig was asked to help Levi Hospital in Hot Springs with its books. He agreed and grew attracted to health care finance. He had to learn how hospitals and physicians were paid, and after he did, “I was hooked,” he said.

Craig left BKD and became Levi’s comptroller. He later joined St. Joseph’s Mercy Health Center in Hot Springs, where he stayed until 2010.

Craig is a member of the Nashville Rotary Club, where he was president in 2019-2020. He also is a member of the Nashville Chamber of Commerce. “I think it’s important that we serve and do our part to make a difference,” he said. “That’s why I’m active here, because I want to live here and be part of the community. And that’s how you have a good life.”
