Helm Fertilizer Terminal Inc. of Memphis is set to officially begin construction Thursday on a $12 million expansion at Helena Harbor, the company announced.

Combined with work to optimize Helm's existing facility, the expansion will more than double the east Arkansas terminal's pre-2018 capacity to offload, blend and store fertilizer. The facility moved 160,000 tons of fertilizer in 2021.

Gov. Asa Hutchinson is among those set to attend a groundbreaking ceremony at the facility Thursday.

Last year, Helena Harbor gained status as a “designated project” on the U.S. Marine Highway System by the U.S. Department of Transportation. That classification raised the profile of the slack water harbor and its 4,000-acre industrial park.

It also opened the door to annual grant opportunities with the Marine Highway program.
