Shay Stevens lives by the motto "Care for the world and all that is in it."
Stevens started Millennium Adult Day Care to help care for older adults who are functionally disabled and still living with their families who have to work or are otherwise busy during the daytime. It’s an alternative to around-the-clock institutionalization, she said.
As a New Orleans transplant, Stevens said Little Rock was very business friendly. "I could not believe how highly, highly efficient – it was so easy," she said of the process of filing for her business. Stevens moved to Little Rock after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
She said everything about the city of Little Rock and the state of Arkansas had been welcoming and she sees her new business as a way to give back economically to the area.
Clients can participate in a number of activities like arts-and-crafts sessions or they can play bridge. Stevens schedules "in-house field trips" where health care professionals come in to discuss different topics with clients. Stevens has had a representative from a bookstore come in as well. Stevens said Millennium also provides a hot lunch and two snacks coordinated with clients’ individual dietary constraints every day.
To the get the word out, Stevens has made the rounds of hospitals and doctors offices to build her connections in the hope of getting referrals. She also has been placing brochures around town wherever businesses will allow and now has a Facebook page for Millennium.
She expects her business to grow. "It is a very needed service," Stevens said. "You may not get rich, but you will definitely be very fulfilled, and you’ll help a lot of families."
