Tyson Foods Inc. of Springdale on Wednesday said David Van Bebber has been promoted to executive vice president and general counsel.

Van Bebber joined Tyson in 1986 and has held various officer positions within the company during his tenure.

"Because of his extensive background in legal matters involving the meat and poultry industry and his knowledge of our company, we believe David is well qualified for this position," Richard Bond, president and CEO of Tyson, said. "He has served our company well for many years, demonstrating an outstanding work ethic and I look forward to his continued leadership as the head of our legal department."

Van Bebber’s promotion, effective immediately, will make him Tyson’s chief legal officer, overseeing all of the company’s legal matters.

A graduate of the University of Arkansas School of Law, Van Bebber is currently president of the board of education for the Springdale school district.

The appointment comes are Tyson’s former general counsel, J. Alberto Gonzalez-Pita, left the company May 2.

Gonzales-Pita’s salary for fiscal 2007 was $508,000, up 3.1 percent from 2006, according to Tyson’s proxy statement.
