Frank Broyles, the 82-year-old University of Arkansas athletic director who has been at the university for almost 50 years, said Saturday that he will retire, according to Arkansasbusiness.com news partner KTHV-TV, Channel 11.
Broyles made the announcement at a 9:30 a.m. meeting of the university’s board of trustees.
The announcement caps two days of speculation as to whether Broyles, who has spent more than 30 years at the helm of the UA program, would retire, resign or be forced out by the board.
KTHV reports that at the meeting on Saturday, friends and community members arrived to show their support for Broyles. On Friday, the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce sent e-mails asking supporters to attend the meeting to show support for Broyles, another sign that the athletic director might make an announcement.
Broyles is expected to remain in some role with the university for the rest of the calendar year so that he can mark his 50th anniversary there. Meanwhile, a national search will take place for a new athletic director.
