A-State, Miami Settle Over Canceled Football Game

1 min read

Arkansas State University and the University of Miami agreed Monday to dismiss lawsuits related to the cancellation of a football game in Jonesboro on Sept. 9, 2017.

A-State said in a news release that the two reached a settlement in which Miami would pay Arkansas State $400,000. That’s less than the $650,000 in damages sought by A-State original lawsuit, filed in February.

“I am pleased that both lawsuits have been resolved and that this matter is now behind us,” Brad Phelps, general counsel for the Arkansas State University System, said in a news release. “I believe this is a fair resolution of these issues.”

Per Monday’s agreement, the canceled game will not be rescheduled. Miami also agreed to dismiss its lawsuit against A-State.

In September, a judge ordered the two to use a third-party mediator to resolve the dispute, which arose after Miami canceled a scheduled game against A-State over concerns about Hurricane Irma. The judge gave them a Dec. 20 deadline.
