The Adult Education Division of the Arkansas Department of Career Education will celebrate 50 years of adult education in Arkansas with a series of events during Adult Education Week.
The kickoff event will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday on the steps of the state Capitol.
Lt. Gov. Tim Griffin will present a proclamation declaring Sept. 19-23 as Adult Education Week in Arkansas. The event will also feature leaders from the Department of Career Education and a success story told by a GED graduate and former employee of the office of Gov. Mike Beebe. It will culminate in a graduation-style cap toss.
Through the program, the state offers free adult basic education, adult secondary education, correctional/institutional education, English language acquisition, family literacy, GED testing services, integrated education and training, Workforce Alliance for Growth in the Economy (WAGE) certificates and workplace education.
In addition to the kickoff event, the anniversary celebration will include a special broadcast at 7 p.m. Thursday of “Arkansans Ask” on AETN. An awards luncheon with keynote speaker Gov. Asa Hutchinson at the Governor’s Mansion will take place at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21.
