AFCU Offers Interest-Free Loans to Government Workers Affected by Shutdown

2 min read

Arkansas Federal Credit Union of Jacksonville said it will continue to offer interest-free loans to members who are preparing to miss another paycheck as the partial government shutdown continues.

To date, the credit union has issued 43 interest-free loans to replace missed paychecks. These loans total $70,363, with an average loan being $1,636.

“We remain prepared to quickly provide assistance to ensure our members have access to the funds they need when they need them,” President and CEO Rodney Showmar said in a news release. “Our commitment to ‘be the difference’ for members is real, and we’ll always do what it takes to protect and support our members.”

Individuals with pre-established checking accounts at AFCU that receive a direct deposit from the U.S. federal government may be eligible to get a short-term, interest-free loan.

In addition, the credit union will conduct a free financial review during the shutdown for all members and potential members, to see if any new savings can be realized. Membership is open to all Arkansas residents.

Wednesday marks the 33rd day of the shutdown, with Democrats and President Trump locked in standoff over Trump’s demand for border wall funding. The move has put federal workers on the sidelines, many working without pay.

Late Tuesday, Duane Kees, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Arkansas, announced that the grand jury session for January had been canceled due to “a lack of resources” as a result of the shutdown.

According to The Associated Press, the White House isn’t saying whether Trump would veto a bill that’s in the Senate this week to reopen the government through Feb. 8 while negotiations continue over the U.S.-Mexico wall.

Another bill also set for a Senate vote reflects Trump’s offer to trade border wall funding for temporary protection for some immigrants. Democrats have rejected the plan.
