Project: Fayetteville High School Addition and Renovation – Phase II

The new Fayetteville High School was built in two phases and totals over 500,000 SF, becoming the largest civic project in Fayetteville in the last 50 years. The first phase houses new administration, cafeteria, performing arts, and athletic facilities. The second phase houses primarily academic facilities, allowing for the integration of 9th grade students, and was completed in August 2015.

Built in 1912, the Friedman-Mincer building occupies a prominent intersection, Texas Corner, in downtown Fort Smith. The building received a new structural frame within the existing brick walls and a full finish-out of the second and third floors, leaving the first floor as available space to rent. The new structure is a combination of steel columns and beams with glulam floor joists and wood floor decking. The building also received new windows and storefronts in keeping with the historic exterior.

The Cardinal is located on two acres adjacent to the University of Arkansas and maintains 150 units and 470 beds, taking the place of dated low density rental properties. This LEED Gold certified courtyard typology is positioned at the confluence of the rapidly expanding university and a neighborhood filled with underwhelming traditional building stock.

Transparency was used throughout to celebrate the process of creating art as being non-linear and messy. Clustering offices created inspirational zones for faculty and students. The majority of studio spaces have a consistent character and function so they are interchangeable to address surges of interest in the coming years. Function specific studios for screen-printing and utilizing century old letterpresses have been tailored to unique equipment and processes.

Funded by a highly profitable athletics department, Champions Hall fills a campus-wide deficit in classroom and laboratory environments while serving as an interactive hub and student destination that energizes the surrounding campus neighborhood. Students have opportunities to engage with the building utilizing the large open lounges and exterior terraces as social and interactive learning environments.
