AIA Merit Awards: Skiles Architect, Miller Boskus Lack Architects

Project: B House
Firm: Skiles Architect PA

Contractor: Steve Powell
Location: Fayetteville

The B House, a 1,656-SF home, is a dramatic addition to the corner of a transitional and diverse Fayetteville neighborhood. It was recently included on a fundraiser ‘historic district’ house tour event, the only modern participant, providing casual observers the opportunity to experience inviting contemporary interior spaces within this compelling facade.

The dynamic living space and bedroom suite provide a daily respite for the busy home owners by maximizing space with abundant day lighting, high ceilings, and a restrained palette of warmly hued rock and wood. A private first-floor home office is equipped with high windows, outside deck access, and built-in white oak bookshelves. Outside privacy, when desired, is a flexible component within the slatted front porches. The kitchen terrace can be experienced with dramatic light spilling through its closed slats or opened with framed mountain views and sunsets.

Project: Brough Commons Starbucks Addition and Remodel
Firm: Miller Boskus Lack Architects PA

Contractor: Flintco LLC
Location: Fayetteville

The location of an overcrowded and undersized Starbucks became the impetus for the design of an expansion that captures space from an adjacent busy plaza. The existing coffee shop located in the corner of Brough Commons – a low 1950’s era dining facility on the University of Arkansas’ Fayetteville campus – was dingy, low-ceilinged, crowded, without adequate queuing area, and in need of remodel and expansion.

When the potential for expanding into the surrounding plaza was first considered, the desire for just a longer queuing line quickly gave way to a grander vision. The project began to take form as a light-filled space that added vibrancy to the hustle and bustle of the coffee shop.

By pushing past the confines of the existing concrete structure, the objective to integrate the coffee shop into the surrounding plaza became the focus. Through mindful detailing between how the sky, walls and plaza meet each other, the heavily travelled campus paths merge with those of the coffee shop.
