Gov. Asa Hutchinson and Sonja Hubbard, chairwoman of the Arkansas Research Alliance board of trustees.
The Arkansas Research Alliance, the University of Arkansas for Medical Science and Gov. Asa Hutchinson on Thursday announced two new ARA scholars and two new ARA fellows.
The occasion marked the first time the ARA has awarded fellowships to researchers from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration’s National Center for Toxicology Research in Jefferson County.
The governor and the FDA signed a memorandum of understanding last week to extend the state’s partnership with the center for another five years.
The two ARA scholars work for UAMS.
The new ARA scholars are David W. Ussery, Ph.D., director of the Arkansas Center for Genomic and Ecological Medicine; and Hong-YuLi, Ph.D., a professor in the College of Pharmacy’s Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Li was recently awarded the Helen Adams & Arkansas Research Alliance Endowed Chair.
The new ARA fellows are Weida Tong, Ph.D., director of the Division of Bioinformatics and Biostatistics at the NCTR; and Paul C. Howard, Ph.D., director of the Office of Scientific Coordination at the NCTR.
Officials at the announcement said the scholars program recruits new talent to the state’s research universities. The fellows program recognizes talent that is already here at UAMS, Arkansas State University, the University of Arkansas, the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
