Arkansas Baptist College announced Thursday the selection of Howard Gibson to serve as its interim president. He began working in that capacity on Dec. 19.
Gibson replaces Joseph Jones, who was terminated for cause on Dec. 18 over his lack of transparency with trustees on issues that could place them and the institution at significant risk of financial and legal jeopardy.
Gibson has more than 14 years of experience in business and higher education. Previously, he served as the college’s chief academic officer, dean of the School of Business and director of the Scott Ford Center for Entrepreneurship & Community Development.
Gibson majored in accounting. He earned his master’s of business administration degree and his doctorate of philosophy with an emphasis on urban higher education from Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi.
“The current challenges will be resolved with hard work and paying attention to the basics,” Gibson said in a news release. “We are in a difficult position, but we have a plan to restore the institution to its previous strong financial standing within the year. If the board had not acted when they did, we may not have had the opportunity to rebound.”
