The Little Rock Air Force Base Federal Credit Union was established in 1956 by seven airmen in a room in the airmen’s housing. More than half a century later, Arkansas Federal Credit Union has seen more evolution than just a name change.
The Jacksonville-headquartered company now has 14 locations across the state and approximately 270 employees, and it works hard to make sure they’re all taken care of and happy.
“We want to create an environment where employees feel special, empowered, developed, challenged and valued for their contributions to our cause,” Human Resources Manager Christine Worth said. “We try to look at how our decisions may impact our employees and how best to reduce that impact through initial and ongoing education and support.”
AFCU offers tickets to sporting events and festivals, fitness contests, massages, food truck visits and the annual corporate olympics — a little friendly athletic competition between coworkers.
The company arranges donation and volunteer opportunities, which employees take advantage of, to benefit organizations like Arkansas Children’s Hospital, American Heart Association and the Arkansas FoodBank.
The family-friendly atmosphere at AFCU is key, and is evident in how employees are encouraged to bring families to community activities and to tour the facility. Workers also receive dental and vision benefits at no cost, which includes short-term and long-term disability at no cost after a year of employment.
“We are like a big family,” Worth said. “We want our employees to ‘Be the Difference’ by making a difference in the lives of those that we serve. We have some pretty lofty dreams to achieve, and it takes a special kind of person to work at AFCU, but why wouldn’t you want to work here?”
Neat Thing We Do
Every company has a Christmas party, but AFCU’s is a staff favorite. All the offices across the state come together to get dressed up and enjoy good food and good company with coworkers and family. With ever-changing venues, themes and entertainment, AFCU always recognizes outstanding work by employees, presents a slideshow from the year and sets up photo booths and a professional photographer to capture the merriment.
