Arkansas is among the states that rely most heavily on imports of steel and aluminum, according to an analysis by the Brookings Institution, a public policy nonprofit based in Washington, D.C.
In March, shortly after the Trump administration announced it was imposing tariffs of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum, Brookings analyzed states’ possible exposure to the tariffs, using U.S. Census Bureau data.
In 2017, according to Brookings, 4.9 percent of Arkansas’ imports relied on steel and aluminum, putting it at No. 5 among the 50 U.S. states.
