ASTA Provides Commercialization Funds for NanoWatt Chip Design

1 min read

The Arkansas Science & Technology Authority has invested $100,000 from its seed capital investment program in Fayetteville startup NanoWatt Design, the ASTA announced Thursday.

NanoWatt will use the investment to commercialize its proprietary asynchronous SCL circuit design technology and compiler that is designed to save the battery life of tech-based devices.

NanoWatt CEO Ron Foster said SCL (Sleep Convention Logic) is the key feature that makes the chip design unique.

“Over 10 billion people are now accessing the Internet on a daily basis, and the market is demanding increased functionality and speed from mobile devices,” he said in a news release. “The problem is, battery technology simply can’t keep up. Nanowatt Design’s Sleep Convention Logic combats this problem by allowing devices to wake up and run the chosen application needed, but then sends the device back into sleep mode when completed.”

Foster said SCL uses only one fifth of the power required by even the most state-of-the-art chips available today. This reduces the drain on the processor and battery, while increasing the speed of the device being used at the same time.

Earlier this year, NanoWatt completed Phase 1 of a federal research grant to develope methods for improving battery life in vision processors, including those used in the defense industry.

NanoWatt is a client firm of Innovate Arkansas and a portfolio company of VIC Technology Venture Development of Fayetteville.
