Bill Walker, director of the Arkansas Department of Career Education, will not continue in the role under Gov.-elect Asa Hutchinson.
In a memo to department staff Wednesday, Walker said he was told by Hutchinson that a change in leadership would occur.
“During the transition, I have pledged my absolute support and cooperation with this new administration and the future director and I respectfully ask for yours as well,” Walker said in the memo.
J.R. Davis, communication director for the Hutchinson administration, confirmed Friday morning the governor-elect would not retain Walker. Davis said there is no timetable for when a replacement will be named.
“I want to thank Bill for his years of public service to the people of Arkansas as director of ADCE, and I appreciate his willingness to help during this time of transition,” Hutchinson said in a statement.
Walker, who previously served eight years in both the Arkansas House of Representatives and state Senate, has been director since March 2007. No replacement has been named.
As inauguration draws closer, Hutchinson has begun the shuffle of retaining and replacing various agency heads, and has also made several senior staff hires.
