Brad Phelps Promoted to University Counsel for ASU System

1 min read

Brad Phelps has been promoted to the position of university counsel for the Arkansas State University System.

Phelps started at the ASU System in September, after 11 years at the attorney general’s office. He became Attorney General Dustin McDaniel’s chief deputy in April 2010.

“Brad has been an excellent addition to the ASU System legal team and quickly demonstrated his talent and knowledge of state operations and public policy,” Charles L. Welch, president of the ASU System, said in a news release. “His leadership and management experience makes him a natural choice to move into university counsel role.”

The Office of University Counsel handles legal issues for the ASU System and its campuses. It also provides legal advice, review of contracts and agreements, and legal representation. A search for Phelps’ successor as associate university counsel will be conducted.

Phelps replaces Lucinda McDaniel, who is retiring Dec. 31 after six years with the ASU System. The move is effective Jan. 1.
