2024 Arkansas Business of the Year // Nonprofit Organization of the Year

Augusta

For more than 40 years ARcare has been providing family health care services to people in rural communities.

Based in Augusta, the nonprofit organization has 75 locations across Arkansas, Mississippi and Kentucky. The services provided include primary care, behavioral health and community outreach programs.

Dr. Steven F. Collier, ARcare’s CEO, helped grow the organization, which was first called North Arkansas Human Services and provided health services at three clinics. In 1986, the services offered shifted to primary care under the name White River Rural Health Center.

In the 2000s, the organization became ARcare. It has a budget of about $120 million and has 1,500 employees.

Collier reduced his time practicing medicine in 2015 to focus on managing ARcare.

ARcare serves about 120,000 patients, and Collier said it’s been successful because of its partnerships. “That’s how we determine which town we go to next or which state we go to next,” he said. “And then we have the talent pool to accommodate those partnerships.”
