A manufacturer in Jonesboro was importing materials solutions from out of state. Meanwhile, University of Arkansas researchers were developing breakthrough materials technologies 150 miles away. Neither knew the other existed, a disconnect the Arkansas Research Alliance was created to solve.
Founed in 2008, ARA started with a simple mandate: make research matter for economic development. Seventeen years later, that focus has generated $1.3 billion in economic impact, nearly 350 high-paying STEM jobs and $26 million in new state tax revenues.
ARA’s 2025 breakthrough came through AR-NETWORK, an $8 million National Science Foundation award connecting every Arkansas university through shared data infrastructure and coordinated research efforts.
With 34 Academy scholars, 61 funded Impact Grant projects generating $26 million in follow-on funding, and programming serving 500 to 700 researchers annually, ARA has transformed Arkansas from a disconnected research landscape into a competitive innovation ecosystem.
