In early 1990, 27-year-old Trish Groves had nothing but an $8,000 loan, some big ideas and a space just large enough for a computer in a tiny spare room of her home.

Fifteen years later, Communications Development Inc. is a nationally known advertising firm specializing in the transportation business.

“Communications Development is the most referred agency in the transportation industry and because of this we have seen a phenomenal growth throughout recent years,” Groves said.

The agency, now operating in a lakefront office in Maumelle, got a fortunate break early in its history. Steve Williams, president of Maverick Transportation of North Little Rock, put his faith in Groves’ small operation to handle his company’s marketing and advertising needs. In 1995, Communications Development had to move out of Grove’s house and into a 600-SF office space.

Another break came shortly thereafter when Covenant Transport of Chattanooga, Tenn., doled out a tiny portion of its advertising needs to Communications Development. Soon after, Covenant Transportation’s main ad agency made a crucial design mistake in a magazine ad; Communications Development became Covenant’s agency of record.

“The mistake provided an opportunity for Communications Development, and the company’s hard work and dedication to quality got our foot in the door of this giant corporation,” said Groves.

The company used that increasing momentum to expand into its 7,000-SF office in Maumelle and now employs a team of 23 writers, graphic designers and advertising specialists. Groves’ husband, Larry, hired on along the way as vice president in charge of operations, allowing Trish to concentrate solely on sales.

With the transportation industry currently facing a driver deficit, CDI is looking at a strong demand for its services and hopes to continue its track record of having never lost a client.
