Back in 1983, Dexter Doyne decided to take his experience maintaining the family’s rental properties and doing remodeling work for others in a new direction.
“I had a 1972 pickup truck, a few hand tools and sweat equity along with a vision and a desire to build an outstanding construction company business,” Doyne said.
From this modest start in the College Station area of Little Rock, his namesake general contracting firm has grown into a regional player with a staff of 12 who work on individual contracts valued upwards of $5 million.
As the company developed, federal government projects came to dominate its work volume during the late 1980s to the late 1990s. By the mid-2000s, government contracts were supplanted by private sector work in the design-to-build market.
The pursuit of business in this sector broadened the customer base to include more schools, colleges, banks and apartments.
“We found that to be beneficial,” Doyne said. “They were counting on us to make it happen, to work the budget, work the numbers and work the design.”
Among his company’s higher profile projects are the Clinton School of Public Service, the water feature at the Clinton Presidential Library and installation of the Little Rock Nine Historic Monument.
Doyne shelved a would-be career in the film industry in 1977 after graduating with a degree in motion picture production and direction from San Francisco State University.
He was drawn back home to help care for his ailing father and to look after the family business, a decision that led to his entry into construction.
Doyne hasn’t looked back since.
He and the firm have received awards and recognition for professional and community achievements over the years while charting a successful course amid stiff competition.
