Cromwell Success Story Continues

The Little Rock firm of Cromwell Architects Engineers continues to expand on its unparalleled success in the 1990s. Sales approached $11 million in 1998, allowing the company to maintain its above-industry standard growth rate of 9.5 percent.

The 104-year-old firm has kept up the pace by pursuing jobs all over the nation and assembling a talented 100-member staff equipped with the latest technology. Half of the company’s manpower is devoted to out-of-state work.

The new $40 million corporate headquarters for Beverly Enterprises Inc. in Fort Smith, which will consolidate the company’s operations under one 320,000-SF roof, is among its current high-profile projects in Arkansas.

Other recent projects include the Cypress Plaza Office Building in west Little Rock, the Rank Video facility in North Little Rock and the Arkansas State Police Headquarters in southwest Little Rock.

The firm landed its first-ever control tower project in 1998. The creative design on the Little Rock Air Force Base job caught the fancy of Uncle Sam and led to four other control towers at U.S. Air Force bases in Florida, Texas and Arizona.

Cromwell’s creative touch turned another mundane military project into an award-winning venture. In fact, an office/warehouse development for the Arkansas Air National Guard garnered two design awards.

“For an office/warehouse project, this is highly unusual,” says Eugene Levy, chairman and chief executive officer.

The recognition continues a string of award-winning work for the company. Cromwell has designed more than 50 projects for the military since 1978.

Private prison work has become a growing sector of the company’s portfolio. Five prison projects in Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and New Mexico are in varying stages of completion, ranging in cost from $20 million-$40 million each.

The firm’s health care-related work stretches from Georgia and North Carolina to Arkansas and Texas on out to California.
