Hardwood Floor Covering Business Shines Brightly

Mac Hogan took National Coatings Co. at Jacksonville to the big leagues.

National Coatings manufactures hardwood floor coatings for homes, businesses, gyms and sports arenas, said Hogan, the president of the company.

The company has coated the courts for the Alltel Arena in North Little Rock, the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville basketball team and most of the hardwood courts in the National Basketball Association.

When Hogan and two partners bought the business in 1988, it only had one employee. Now the company has 23 on the payroll. The company also has seen its sales jump from $60,000 in its first year to just under $5 million last year.

Hogan bought out his two partners in 1994.

Hogan said the company’s slogan, “Coatings to trust, service you deserve,” sums up the way the company operates.

He credited the company’s success to putting the customer first and having dedicated employees.

One of the hardest obstacles the company has overcome is meeting new government requirements involving fire and safety standards, he said. And the company has had to fight 30 other competitors for business.

The company has worked with Jacksonville Parks and Recreation and worked pro bono to put a coating on the Jacksonville Boys Club gym floor.

Hogan, a mechanical engineer, said the company will invest about 7 percent of its sales revenue on research. We hope to have a population of new products, he said.
