The percentage of Americans without health insurance in 2013 was 13.4 percent, or 42 million people, according to a report released last month by the U.S. Census Bureau.
The findings come from the bureau’s report “Health Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2013,” which is based on information collected in the bureau’s 2014 Current Population Survey Annual Social & Economic Supplement and on its 2013 American Community Survey.
The report traditionally includes comparisons of year-to-year changes in health insurance coverage, but because the CPS has been redesigned, the findings aren’t directly comparable to those of previous years.
Other highlights concerning health insurance coverage in the U.S.:
- Most of those covered, 64.2 percent, were covered by private health insurance; 53.9 percent of that private insurance was employment-based.
- 34.3 percent of the population was covered by government health insurance — 17.3 percent by Medicaid and 15.6 percent by Medicare.
