The U.S. Census Bureau last month released its report on public sector employment, which presents employment and payroll information on state and local governments. The report is based on information from the 2013 Annual Survey of Public Employment & Payroll for March 2013.
The government bodies surveyed include states, counties, cities, townships, special districts and school districts.
In March 2013, federal, state and local governments in the United States employed 21.8 million people, a decline of 208,851 workers, or 0.9 percent, compared with the same period in 2012.
In Arkansas, 194,380 people were employed both full time and part time at the state and local levels in March 2013, with 38.2 percent of those employed at the state level and 61.8 percent at the local level.
The average monthly pay for those employees in Arkansas was $2,968 in March 2013. Average earnings for a full-time worker were $3,515 and for a part-time worker, $765.
