The central Arkansas chapter of 100 Girls of Code will host a class in North Little Rock later this week.
The group, which hosts one-day workshops around the country dedicated to teaching coding to female students, will hold a class at the Innovation Hub in North Little Rock Aug. 8.
On its website, the group points out that the U.S. Department of Labor has estimated that computer-related job openings will reach 1.4 million in the next decade. The governor’s office has also cited the statistic in support of a new law requiring that coding be taught in every high school in the state.
But according to 100 Girls of Code, women make up only 12 percent of recent college graduates in the STEM field. The group began as a way to promote more women in the field.
The class is free to attend, but requires registration at 100GirlsofCode.com.
The group’s Northwest Arkansas Chapter will host its own class on the same day at Startup Junkie in Fayetteville.
