Wal-Mart Stores Inc. isn’t the only big box retailer making big investments in solar.
Kohl’s was ranked second in the country behind Wal-Mart for the most installed solar capacity in a report release in October by the Solar Energy Industries Association, and Ikea was recognized for having the highest percentage of its stores with a solar array.
Julia Fennelly, a spokesman for Kohl’s, said in an email that its stores had 161 arrays, which generate enough power to offset 20 to 50 percent of its energy needs. The company added solar arrays to 19 stores in 2013 and five locations in 2014, she said.
“As a national retailer, it is important for Kohl’s to be a good corporate citizen. We aim to be a corporate sustainability leader, and our solar program demonstrates our commitment to the use and support of renewable energy and our commitment to being a good environmental steward by reducing our operational footprint,” Fennelly said.
Kohl’s also purchases more than a billion kilowatt-hours of renewable energy, which has earned the company several accolades from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
