Spyridoula Maraka, an assistant professor in the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, has received the 2020 Women Advancing Thyroid Research Award from the American Thyroid Association, based in Virginia.
The award recognizes women for their work in thyroid research.
Maraka was one of three women to receive the award. Maraka’s research focuses on hypothyroidism in pregnancy and subclinical hypothyroidism in older adults. She received her medical degree from the University of Athens School of Medicine in Athens, Greece.
Anna Paige Umhoefer has been hired as a clinical manager for NEA Baptist Center for Good Grief in Jonesboro.
Umhoefer previously worked in school-based counseling in Marianna.

Scott Berna was elected president and Robert Kaelin treasurer of the Arkansas Funeral Directors Association, based in Little Rock.
Berna succeeds Kenny Culpepper of Griffin-Culpepper Funeral Service of McGehee as president of the organization.
Berna owns Berna Funeral Homes, which operates Nelson-Berna Funeral Home of Fayetteville, Nelson-Berna Funeral Home of Rogers and Moore’s Chapel Funeral Home in Fayetteville.
Robert Kaelin is the manager at Moore’s Chapel. He has also worked for Griffin Leggett Healy & Roth in Little Rock and Fentress Mortuary in Fort Smith.
