Mia D.M. Phillips to Lead Multicultural Center (UA Little Rock Movers & Shakers)

Mia D.M. Phillips has been named director of the Multicultural Center in the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Phillips will be responsible for developing targeted programming for students and directing initiatives to foster a welcoming campus community in an effort to help recruit and retain students from diverse backgrounds.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve my alma mater in this new role, and I look forward to collaborating with students, faculty and staff to create a Multicultural Center that helps our students achieve their academic and professional goals,” Phillips said.

For eight years Phillips has worked at UA Little Rock in the Office of the Chancellor as communications and special projects coordinator, a role in which she managed and supported several university initiatives, including the Green Dot Violence Prevention Program, the Trojan Touchstone and several programs for the Anderson Institute on Race & Ethnicity. She has also served as an adjunct instructor for the Department of Rhetoric & Writing and for the Charles W. Donaldson Scholars Academy.

“Dr. Phillips’ experience working with our students and matters of diversity will aid the university in building a Multicultural Center that will benefit our students and all of us,” said Mark Allen Poisel, vice chancellor for student affairs.

Phillips received her Doctor of Education in higher education and a master’s degree in professional and technical writing from UA Little Rock and a bachelor’s degree in writing from the University of Central Arkansas.


Hank Bray has accepted a position as chair of the Construction Management & Civil & Construction Engineering Department at UA Little Rock.

Bray served as coordinator of the construction management degree program at UA Little Rock before his promotion. He taught construction management at the University of Louisiana at Monroe for 26 years before moving to Little Rock.


Jeremy Ecke is the new chair of the English Department at UA Little Rock.

Ecke is the current director of linguistics and serves as the coordinator for the Mentored Signature Experience Awards program. He was previously an assistant professor of English at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee.


Stephen Kapp is the new director of the School of Social Work at UA Little Rock.

Kapp has more than 20 years of experience from his previous position at the School of Social Welfare at the University of Kansas, where he had served as interim dean and associate dean for academic affairs.


Vicki Lind has joined UA Little Rock as chair of the Department of Music.

Before her appointment, she served on the music education faculty at the University of California at Los Angeles and the University of Colorado at Boulder.


J.P. Behnke is the new head coach and director of track and field and cross-country at UA Little Rock.

Behnke joins the Trojan staff after serving as interim head coach of Oakland University track and field, where he led the men’s program to their first conference championship.
