Museum of Discovery Appoints Steven Schnell as New Executive Director

2 min read

The Museum of Discovery in Little Rock has appointed Steven Schnell as its new executive director. He will officially begin the new role Oct. 15.

The appointment comes nearly a year after the museum’s former CEO Kelley Bass left the nonprofit on undisclosed terms after 12 years.

Museum board member J. Michael Nauman has served as interim CEO since October. With the transition, the museum is changing the title of its top leadership position from CEO to executive director. Nauman will conclude his interim CEO role, but will remain on the museum’s board of directors.

Schnell, who has more than a decade of leadership experience in the science center field, will guide the museum through organizational growth, community partnerships and innovative program development as it prepares to celebrate its centennial anniversary in 2027.

Schnell most recently served as the executive director of The Science Zone in Casper, Wyoming. There, he guided the organization through a significant expansion to serve broader audiences and host a growing range of educational programs. According to a press release from the Museum of Discovery, under Schnell’s leadership, The Science Zone achieved “dramatic” increases in revenue, membership and community impact, while strengthening its long-term sustainability.

“Steven has had an impressive track record in innovation and development at The Science Zone,” Melissa Bandy, Museum of Discovery Board Chairperson, said in the press release. “I’m excited about the leadership and energy I know Steven will bring to the Museum of Discovery to continue our mission.”

In addition to his work within the center, Schnell was recognized for building strong partnerships with schools, libraries, community centers and peer institutions to expand the reach of science education. His approach emphasizes accessibility and inclusivity, aiming to ensure that high-quality STEAM experiences are available to all learners.

“I have had the privilege to explore Arkansas quite extensively over the past 15 years and have enjoyed several visits to the museum while enjoying time with family in the area,” Schnell said in the release. “It has been thrilling getting to see the museum change as it continues to meet the ever-evolving needs of parents and children.”
