New Alltel Plan Offers Customers Free Calls to Rival Carriers

1 min read

Little Rock’s Alltel Corp. will allow its customers to make free, unlimited calls to as many as 10 phone numbers, even if they are not on an Alltel plan, the company announced late Thursday.

The new plan, My Circle, lets Alltel customers with plans $59.95 or higher choose any combination of 10 wireless, home or office numbers located anywhere in the country. Customers can update those numbers as often as they like.

Many wireless carriers offer plans that allow customers free calls to certain numbers from that carrier, but Alltel’s plan lets customers choose numbers of any provider.

Kevin Beebe, Alltel’s group president of operations, said one of the goals of the new plan was to increase the company’s average monthly revenue per unit, or ARPUT. In its last fiscal year the company’s ARPU was $51.44, best among the five largest wireless carriers.

Beebe also said he hoped the plan would increase the percentage of wireless customers that consider Alltel by 15 percent. He said the company was currently running in the “low 30s.”

Alltel has planned a major marketing campaign for the new plan starting Sunday and including new TV, radio and newspaper ads. And for the first time, the company will make national TV buys.

Alltel is the country’s fifth-largest wireless carrier with about 10.6 million customers in 34 states.
