New Professional Football Team to Take the Field at War Memorial

2 min read

The All-American Football League announced an agreement on Monday with War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock for the famed venue to serve as home field for an Arkansas team in the new League.

The announcement was made by League Vice President of Football Operations and Business Keenan Davis and Stadium Manager Charlie Staggs at War Memorial. Also present were former Arkansas Razorback players Anthony Lucas and Clint Stoerner.

The AAFL plans to have teams in six states: Arkansas, Alabama, Florida, Michigan, Tennessee, and Texas. Locations still under consideration are in Mississippi and Nebraska, the league said.

The league intends to begin its premiere season in April. The season will end with a championship game July 3, 2008.

The league expects the teams to follow a 10-game schedule with a two-week playoff series.

An unusual requirement for players trying out for the league is that not only must have exhausted college eligibility, but must also have graduated from college with a four-year degree.

Tryouts for the new team are scheduled for August 18 at the stadium. The projected income packages for AAFL players range from $40,000 – $100,000 with most players earning between $40,000 – $70,000, according to assistant stadium manager Wayne Dyer.

Coaches and players have yet to be named though Dyer expected those announcements to be made in the next 60 days.

War Memorial Stadium currently hosts the Arkansas Rhinos of the North American Football League. Formed in 2000, the Rhinos play in Little Rock from July to September.

The stadium also remains the site for two Razorback football games each season. This year, the Razorbacks will play Tennessee-Chattanooga on Oct. 6 and Mississippi State on Nov. 17 at War Memorial.
